Reading Time: 3 minutes

Talk about a “WOW” before and after project! These homeowners requested a comfortable, inviting, modern room to enjoy on a daily basis, but one that would also accommodate more guests than their existing furniture. The Landry Designs team added geometric shapes and pieces to create drama for this frequently-used space that is open to the kitchen in this home. Read on to learn more about the process.

DESIGN CHALLENGES ADDRESSED

  • There were several challenges with this space:
  • Fireplace gets lost; windows look low in relation to ceiling height
  • French doors on the right side of the room; one needs to be accessible
  • Large black TV cabinet is overwhelming but functional
  • Furniture is worn and dated and doesn’t provide much seating
  • The husband wants a chair where he can sit and drink coffee every morning and catch up on emails
  • The wife wants a spot to lay down and read or nap

Brand New Flooring

We actually started with the flooring, because the golden stained wood just didn’t lend itself to the modern design they had in mind. The floor was sanded and restained ebony, to get the wood as dark as possible. Overlaying it with the geometric black and white rug, and then adding complementary chain-link print draperies (leaving space for access to the single French door) gave us the perfect foundation for a colorful primary-color upholstery palette of red, yellow and blue.

Dramatic Fireplace

Moving the large black armoire to the left wall allows the fireplace to take center stage (as does the porthole mirror), and creates the perfect corner for the husband’s new marigold velvet lounge chair, topped with abstract art. Two new marine blue chairs with interesting cut-out arms provide extra seating for guests and enhance the lounge vibe.

Inviting Furnishings

The long cherry-red, tufted sofa is the wife’s favorite new reading and napping spot, but also great for a group when entertaining. The oversized brushed-steel cocktail table can be reached by every seat (including the chairs) when serving snacks and beverages.

The Big Reveal

”The excitement and joy that this couple showed during their Big Reveal told me that they felt they had made the right decision in choosing Landry Designs to help them create their new family room. And then we continued on and decorated the rest of their house! We’re so grateful to our wonderful customers for allowing our team to do what we love, and that’s helping you transform your spaces.”
